New Year, New Closet

With the New Year just being a few weeks old, why not celebrate with a new wardrobe. There is just no better time than when the clock strikes and we are heading into a new year, then to evaluate the current state of your closet. Cleaning out, organizing, and adding to your wardrobe can be an overwhelming task. Invite a friend over to help you go through your things with you because it always helps to have a second opinion on clothing. There are some questions you should ask yourself when going through your closet: when was the last time I wore this? Will I ever wear this again? Does it even fit me anymore? If there are shirts or pants in your closet that still have the tags on it and you have had it for over a month, get rid of it! Sell it either on Ebay or donate it to a local charity.

Your goal is to know where all your clothes are, your style, and to be inspired by the new look of your closet. You will eventually begin to see yourself in more of your clothes and you will be able to see what types of items you are going to need instead of just buying clothes just to have. Now go ahead and take your messy closet and turn it into something new.

1. Find a fragrance that complements your skin and natural aroma of your body. The scent should be faint enough to not invade anyone’s “personal space” but enjoyable for others to stay around you. Perfume is meant to improve your character, apparel, and overall being.

2. If you have dry skin, wear extra perfume. When it’s cold outside, wear extra perfume. Cold weather tends to weaken the scent. Therefore in the summertime, you should use less perfume or use a lighter fragrance.

3. The best time for you to put on perfume is right after a shower or bath. After bathing, your skin pores will open and will soak in the perfume. When using the perfume, dab it in unusual places where it will stay warm and keep its scent longer. They are suited on wrists, behind ears, in the inner part of elbows and knees, and on the neck near the collar-bone.

4. There are many positive ways to wear perfume, but there are a few things that you should avoid. There are certain types of jewelry that can become discolored due to the perfume alcohols. It is best to spray perfume on before you put on jewelry.

7 Tips on Mastering How to Stylishly Strut Your Stuff in Heels

Tip #1 - Practice standing in your heels.
It helps standing in front of a mirror so you can observe your posture and balance. If you have trouble keeping your balance, try taking yoga classes.

Tip #2 - Once you feel comfortable standing in heels move onto walking.
When walking make sure with every step you take you straighten and extend your leg while trying to keep your legs as close together as possible. This will help you move more gracefully and avoid the dreaded uncoordinated and awkward walk.

Tip #3 – Break in your new heels.
Don’t try new heels out on a first date or important outing. There’s nothing worse than getting blisters and carrying around a box of band-aids to treat your wounds.

Tip #4 - Sit whenever possible to give your feet a rest.
Resting periodically will make you last longer in your heels by giving your feet a break.

Tip #5 - Customize your soles for added comfort.
Wherever you find even the slightest pain or wrong rubbing on your feet address the area of the heel with some padding, cushions, or inserts.

Tip #6 – Make sure your heels have grips.
Sometimes the sole of heels can be slippery because there are no ridges. To help avoid slipping you should apply grip slips to the bottom of the sole. You can also use sandpaper to roughen the sole.

Tip #7 - Be confident.
Strut your stuff because you know you look gorgeous in those sexy heels. As your confidence grows in your abilities to stand and walk and can move up your heel height. Keep in mind though that you may walk differently in different heel heights. So if you’re going from a short heel one day to a higher heel the next, make sure you take a test run around the house before you leave.

2012 is here! And like every other year before, we find ourselves thinking about New Year’s resolutions. What should I choose as my New Year’s resolution? Should I give up something? Don't be a Winter Fashion Fool!

Dressing appropriately for winter weather can be a challenge, but as long as you pair your outfit with the right outerwear and accessories, you can still be a stylish cold weather diva. In my opinion, there are some major winter fashion faux pas to avoid...

Don't wear baggy pants tucked into your sherpa boots. Especially avoid wind pants, sweatpants or pajama pants or you'll look like you just rolled out of bed.

Don't wear too tiny miniskirts in cold temps. You'll freeze and just look silly. If you want to wear a shorter skirt in the winter, add some cute tights or leggings with tall boots.

Don't wear snowmobiling or bulky winter sport jackets with dressy outfits or mini skirts. Are you going out snowboarding or going to a party? These just don't make sense together.

Don't tuck in sweaters or fleece. Most of the time this just looks bulky and messy.

Don't wear turtlenecks or mock turtlenecks or dickies. This might be a personal preference, but most people can't pull them off. I would always opt for a cute scarf instead.

Don't wear sandals and socks. Should be a no brainer...

Don't wear inappropriate footwear for the snow. High heels, flip flops and canvas shoes are not going to protect your feet from frostbite!

Don't wear layers that don't go together. You should layer up, but try to match colors, patterns and lengths so that you don't end up looking like this...

Most important, just dress warm enough. Make sure you have well-fitted layers and appropriate cold weather accessories and boots to keep your head, hands and feet warm.

By now we are all feeling the pressures of the holiday season. Crowds are everywhere you go! It feels like there is no time to buy presents, let alone wrap them! And then there’s picking out holiday outfits, and dealing with the family!

When I think of stocking stuffers, I tend to think of simple everyday items or essentials like lotions, toothbrushes, soaps, etc. Probably because those are the things that my mom (oops … I mean Santa!) used to put in my stocking. But what about our everyday fashion essentials? No offense Santa, but I can buy my own soaps and lotions. This year when it comes to my stocking, I want to find something more fun!

In my opinion, fashion accessories make absolutely great stocking stuffers. I’d be pumped to find a fun wallet or a scarf in my Christmas stocking. Or maybe some jewelry for that upcoming New Year’s party. There are so many options!

Colorblocking is a term used when you combine different colors that support and complement each other.

The Right Fit

Finding clothing that is flattering and fits can be a tricky feat that’s why it's important to know how to correctly measure yourself to get a close estimate as to the best size that suits you. When measuring it is important to keep the measuring tape comfortably loose, usually about a finger width between the measuring tape and body. Remember since everybody is proportionally unique, all main points of the body may not fall into one size. That is why it is important to try items on and try various sizes. This chart serves only as a basic as to what size you may fall into but may not be true as to every item you will try on.

Things to keep in mind that may cause clothing to fit differently could be the fabric content it's made out of. The two major categories of fabrics are woven and knit fabrics. A woven fabric is made by weaving threads together to form a fabric. Wovens generally do not have a great amount of stretch causing the fit to be less forgiving/generous for the wearer. Knit fabrics are yarns looped together in a variety of patterns to form a fabric. The pattern of the knit will determine the amount of stretch of the fabric. Knitted fabrics will most always have a greater amount of stretch than a woven, thus catering to a greater amount of people.

Bottoms can be difficult to fit because there are several measurements that play a role into the fitting of bottoms; such as waist, hips, thighs, and inseam. Everybody is uniquely proportioned so it is important to focus on what works best for your body type. Vanity offers different fits in denim to accommodate various body types.

Things to keep in mind:

Knowing your body type and what works best will help in the frustration of fitting. What may work for one size medium may not work for the other and vice versa, that is why it’s important to always try things on and keep an open mind to try other items that could work. Try thinking of new ways to wear shirts if you have fit issues wearing a top. For example if it is difficult to button, try wearing it open or cinch it at your natural waist with a belt.

If you find that pants are always to long try taking them to a tailor and get them hemmed. If you find that bottoms fit you in the waist but not in the thighs try wearing more skirts or dresses to eliminate the fitting of a thigh. If you find it difficult to find a good fit for your hips and thighs, try going up a size to fit this area and use a belt to accommodate the waist measurement. Also keep in mind that certain wash treatments will also affect the fit of denim. Most premium styles have different treatments done to them such as washes, baking and grinding which can cause denim to fit differently. Some treatments can cause the denim to feel more ridged and you may need to go up a size. Check out this fit chart for more info on the different denim fits.

Just remember to always try on before purchasing and although one item does not fit it doesn’t mean they all won’t fit. Try new things, keep an open mind, and just have fun!

These talented tall ladies embrace their height and stay effortlessly stylish when it comes to their wardrobe. Sometimes it can be a challenge though for you leggy ladies to find clothing that will accommodate your height. Here are some key tips on how to dress if you are tall and fabulous!

Make sure your top fits:
This goes for all ladies, not just tall ones. Make sure that when you are shopping for tops you pay attention to the arm length when trying things on. Make sure it fits you!

Wear dresses:

Don't give up if dresses seem too short. Style them as tunics by layering them with a pair of leggings or jeans underneath. Maxi dresses are especially flattering on tall women. Try bold prints and colors. They look great on taller frames.

Break out the heels:

Taller women sometimes tend to steer clear of heels because they are already self-conscious of their height. Be proud of your height! Heels can give you an extra confidence boost and empower you to embrace your height!

It's all in the jeans:

Jean shopping can especially be a challenge when it comes to length. Vanity has always kept the tall girl in mind when it comes to jeans. It's nice to have a variety of inseams and styles of jeans to suit your needs, whether you are tall or short. Wide leg and flares are always a flattering style on taller women because they balance a taller frame and cover your feet. Skinny jeans can also be very flattering as well. If you can't find skinny jeans that are long enough, no worries- try tucking your skinny jeans into a pair of tall wedge boots and no one will ever know that they are too short. You also can roll a pair of too short skinnies and pull them off as a pair of crops. Lastly, once you find your perfect length and brand stick with it!

Go Big:

Large statement jewelry and accessories can make an impact on your look. Larger or longer pieces don't get lost on taller women and balance out proportions.

Being from the Midwest we are used to the crazy weather spells like giant snow storms on Halloween but this year we lucked out! Those on the East Coast and in Colorado didn't have it so easy this past weekend and are shoveling out of a wintery mess. So in light of the big storm we thought it would be a good idea to feature an outfit that will gear you up for winter while still looking stylish. A key element to your winter wardrobe is to make sure you have a warm winter coat. This brown twill coat with a fur hood is perfect for the first snow fall. The fur lining and the hood will for sure keep you toasty warm. I love the neutral brown color of this coat. It is perfectly paired with stretch skinny jeans a must-have for winter; because how else can you show off your tall sherpa boots? These are great for winter and the updated look with the buttons on the side are really cute. They are versatile boots where you can opt to wear them tall or fold them over so the fur on the inside shows. A winter outfit wouldn't be complete without accessories like a winter white scarf for extra layering and warmth. Remember winter is a season where more is more! It is the cold hard reality that winter is on its way and it is time to bring out those winter items. One way to update your winter wardrobe is to go for a new winter jacket. This coat is super cute and very functional. It has all the great fashion elements and it will still keep you warm. One thing I love the most about this is that it is a little bit longer than most so it can keep all of you warm during those cold months. I love the stitching pattern on this sweater. It looks fresh and the buttons down the sides are a great new detail to a traditional sweater.


I am in love with the basic legging, whether it’s dressing it up with boots and a tunic sweater or lounging bare foot at home with a hoodie. Not only does it look great but it also fits great. The 95% Cotton, 5% Spandex fabric content helps with comfort and fit and you can machine wash and dry! I am always ranting and raving about fashion meeting function and this little hat does just that. Made of wool for warmth but as cute as can be!


I love the wine color of this wool jacket and the piping detail is great! This is a perfect jacket to wear for fall. When it gets a little colder out add a cute scarf, hat and mittens to look stylish and still stay warm! I love these ear muffs! They are so adorable and work perfect to keep your ears warm while not messing up your hair!

We have paired a basic bright thermal underneath this gray cable sweater to add a pop of color. To achevie an even more layered look pair a vest over your sweater. Do you have what it takes to be a manager in today’s retail? Vanity is looking for someone to be a perfect fit for the Vanity brand. Someone who can be a rock star at motivating others and have the drive and passion to run you’re their own store. Could that be you?

The MIT program requires you to relocate twice. Once for the training program and then again upon completion to any one of our stores within the 27 states we are located. Both the training and store locations are decided upon by Vanity based on their needs at that time. The program is 14 weeks long. Under the direction of one of our Mentor Managers, you will learn how to coach and lead to drive sales through staffing, training, and developing a team. After successful completion of our 4 month program you will be ready to manage one of our stores solo.

Another year of American Idol is approaching and we’re all wondering who the next winner will be. As much talent as that show sees, it is certainly not surprising to see that even those who are not the American Idol still achieve Idol status. Many of the contestants that participate on the show may not have won but they move on to develop their own musical careers after the show. One contestant in particular, Pia Toscano, from season ten did just that. She has her new single, “This Time” and signed a recording deal with Interscope Records which she debuted while she was on the American Idol Tour this year. Her time on Idol may have been cut short but she has definitely made a name for herself.

While watching her on Idol I was always a fan of her sense of style along with her amazing ability to sing. On the show I would describe her style as girly yet sophisticated with a hint of glitz. She always looked very put together and poised while she was on stage. She is a girl who is not afraid to accessorize. She finds balance by using statement pieces to glam up a classic outfit. Beauty Review: Sally Hanson Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips

I am not one to do my nails very often so when I was walking though the makeup/ beauty isle at my local drug store I was intrigued with the new Sally Hanson nail polish strips. I love the way my nails look after I get them done or paint them myself, but I hate waiting for them to dry! So when I saw that these were just a simple strip that you apply to your nail and file down I was curious. I opted for a pink shade because pink is my favorite color and I didn’t want to go with something too crazy just in case I didn’t like it. There were a lot of different options from solid bright colors to animal prints. So I went home and tried it out and was pleasantly surprised with the results and how long it lasted! Nearing the end of September I am in full fall wardrobe mode! I have broken out the sweaters, boots, jackets and scarves! What I love about a fall wardrobe is being able to layer up and not only stay stylish but warm. This week’s outfit of the week is all about the layering pieces and how to bring the look all together. We have started with a colorful basic cami to add a pop of color under this lace inset dolman sweater. Then we paired it with stretch skinny jeans. To add more layering aspects to this outfit we have accessorized it with a zebra splatter print scarf and a satin ruffle trench coat. If you wanted to add more layers you could pair a cardigan over it and belt it to add definition to your waist. To add a little height to your look we have paired this outfit with these comfortable wedge black booties an ideal fall/ winter shoe! They are cute paired with your skinny jeans, flares, skirts or dresses. Complete the look with stacked bangles and these trend right statement rhinestone feather earrings.
